It is hard to be productive with chronic pain because pain is like a brick weighing you down. I struggled with keeping up productivity and sticking to a schedule while trying to manage my headache. Overtime, I learned some techniques and lessons to have a productive day with chronic pain and want to share them!
1. Have a morning routine that gets your day started
I stick to a morning routine and this increases my productivity. My morning routine includes meditating for 10 minutes every day, reading if I have time, and having a substantial breakfast.
2. Schedule breaks into your day
I try to schedule 5-10 minute breaks every 1-2 hours so I can take time away from my work and relax.
3. Find a study routine that works best for you
I personally like to study in the morning, but it is important to know when you are most productive during the day.
4. Schedule a time to exercise or go outside
I try to get movement into my day during the evenings, whether it is a yoga class, going for a walk or run, or playing tennis.
5. Change your study/work area once in a while
I used to do work in my room for a long period of time, but I like to change my work area by studying outside or at a coffee shop with a friend!
6. Know that it’s ok not to have a productive day every day.
Chronic pain is physically and mentally draining, and there are times when you just need a rest day and have to listen to your body. Some days, my pain is at my baseline level and I can accomplish more during the day. Other days, I don’t feel as well and know my body is telling me to take a break. You do not need to be productive every day, and it is important to listen to your body.
