This Monday, I started my first day of online school. I am excited for the school year but worried at the same time because one of my headache triggers is looking at a screen for too long. I am also worried that I will not be able to focus and my headache will increase throughout the day. Over the past 2 years, I have learned some tips that help pace myself and manage headaches during online school.
1. Take breaks from looking at the screen
Because online school can be very taxing, especially for people with headaches, I make sure to take one break every 1-2 hours from being on a computer. This can be helpful for anyone, regardless of having a pain condition, because looking at the screen for too long has negative effects on your eyes and can lead to headaches. I set a timer every 2 hours and turn off my computer or get up and walk around.
2. Get up from your desk and stand or walk around for 1 minute
This is another tip that is helpful for anyone, regardless of having a pain condition. It is very easy to get in the habit of staying at your desk all day, but walking or standing for one minute will help break your period of focus and allow you to take a break.
3. Remember to hydrate
Drinking water throughout the day is very important, especially if you suffer from headaches. I make it a goal to drink water once every hour, and this prevents my headache from spiking due to dehydration.
4. Talk to your teacher about accommodations
Having a pain condition is hard to manage while going to school, and it is very important that you advocate for yourself and tell your teachers about possible accommodations you want. For example, I have accommodations with my teachers that I can take breaks when I need them, have extra time on tests, can take medication during class if needed, and can drink water and eat during class.
