Managing stress is a struggle for many people. With school being virtually and not knowing the circumstances, stress has been very high for many people during the pandemic. When I get stressed, I feel tensed up and like I cannot do anything. This feeling would affect my whole day until I learned techniques that help relieve stress. I have learned stress-relieving techniques throughout my life from doctors, psychologists, and people around me. Here are 10 tips I learned that help reduce stress.
1. Find a relaxing hobby whether that is cooking, watching a show, or anything else that makes you relaxed.
My stress-relieving hobbies include cooking, exercising, and reading.
2. Spend time outside in nature.
I like to go on hikes, walks in the neighborhood, and the beach to watch the sunset.
3. Keep a journal
I recommend writing down your thoughts, what is inducing your stress, how you will accomplish your tasks for the day, and things that make you happy at the moment. It is always important to practice gratitude and that helps me reduce stress as well!
4. Be present
Thinking about the past or the future can make you anxious, and this has been a struggle for me. What I have learned overtime is to be present and not worry about the future.
5. Make sure to get enough sleep
I noticed that when I do not get enough sleep I am very tired during the day and my pain increases, which ultimately causes more stress. I make sure to get at least 8 hours of sleep a day.
6. Listen to relaxing music
7. Eat a healthy diet and incorporate movement into your day
I learned that fueling my body with healthy foods and taking care of myself has significantly reduced stress. Whether that is doing a workout, yoga, or going for a walk, getting some movement into your day is a great stress-reliever.
8. Connect with others
Feeling isolated and lonely is common, especially during the pandemic, and it’s important to talk with friends and family so you do not feel alone. Although it is hard to physically see others during the pandemic, I like to facetime, text, and talk on the phone.
9. Practice relaxation techniques like deep breathing, meditation, and yoga.
Over the past 2 years, I have learned many relaxation techniques to relieve stress and manage pain. My two favorite techniques are meditation and yoga.
10. Remind yourself that you are doing the best you can and it is ok to to slow down and take a break.
I tend to put too much on my plate and that causes more stress. Overtime, I have learned it is essential to take breaks and slow down or else I risk getting burnt out. If I ever feel overwhelmed or stressed, I remind myself that I am doing the best I can and need to take a break and listen to my body.
