2020 was a physically and mentally challenging year. From the world being turned upside-down due to the pandemic to everyone being locked down at home, 2020 tested everyone and made clear what people need to prioritize.
I was thriving in the beginning of 2020. From doing well in school to not missing a day due to my headaches to hanging out with friends, I lived a very busy life. On March 13,2020, life around me shut down. From schools closing to extracurriculars shutting down to being in the house all day, my once busy life disappeared instantly. At the start, I did not know what to do and felt useless. I had difficulties practicing my pain management techniques. My once filled day from 7 am to 8 pm transformed into having barely anything to do during the day. I felt unproductive, unmotivated, and stuck. It took weeks to finally get used to the “new normal” and find activities to do. As time went on, I became used to my new routine and became busy again (but at home). From finding new hobbies to having school online to spending time with friends, I learned a lot about myself in 2020 and want to share 5 lessons!
1. Self care is not a privilege but a necessity.
2020 taught me that taking care of yourself is one of the most important things. Whether that is meditating, exercising, eating healthy, or finding a new hobby, make sure to take care of your own well-being
2. It is ok to slow down; everyone needs a physical and mental break.
Before the lockdown, I would always be on the go and rarely take breaks. During lockdown, I realized my past lifestyle was not working and I need to slow down. Now, I take breaks by talking with family and friends, cooking, and reading. Taking breaks throughout the day is essential so you do not risk burn out.
3. Find joy and happiness in the little things in life.
I always look forward to facetiming friends, trying a new recipe, exercising, or making a homemade latte in the afternoon!
4. Mental health and physical health are equally important.
Before the pandemic, I would prioritize my physical health. It took time to realize my mental health is just as important and I need to be kind to myself and not have as high expectations. This is why self care is so important!
5. It is ok to feel unmotivated
There were days or weeks where I had no motivation to do anything and that is normal. With being home almost all day, it can feel like living the same day over again. To regain my motivation, I switch up my routine, talk with friends, or take a break to recharge.
